Primary School Prep DIY Guide-Writing-Page 3

PRE-WRITING LINES/SHAPES

Shapes

The types of shapes we mean are circles, triangles , squares, rectangles, etc.

You can prepare the letters yourself or you can buy a book of handwriting shapes.

Let your child continue practicing sheets with shapes until you can see that they are comfortably tracing the shapes and then move them onto writing letters.

WRITING LETTERS AND WORDS

Single letters - small case

Tracing

The first stage is to trace the letters of the alphabet:

Rather than having all the letters of the alphabet on an A4 page, we advise breaking the letters of the alphabet:

“a” to “e”

“f” to “j”

“k” to “n”

”o” to “r”

”s” to “v”

“w” to “z”

Then, have only sets of letters, “a” to “e” on one A4 page, and then “f” to “j” on another A4 page.

There should be a majority of lower-case letters but also some upper-case letters. They should also be dotted so that your child can trace the letters. The letters should also sit on lines.

There should also be a red dot to show your child where to start and arrows to show your child which direction to go when they are tracing.

There should be lines on the page where the lower case is to be written and lines where the upper case should be written. The lower-case lines are to be 1cm and the upper case, 2cm.

If you cannot prepare the sheets yourself and do not wish to access Primary School Prep Done 4U, then please purchase a handwriting book that is similar.
