PRE-WRITING LINES/SHAPES

Lines - standing /sleeping/ slanting/curves

The first step is to teach your children standing, sleeping and slanting lines and curves.

These examples are taken from the writing programme at Primary School Prep Done 4U:

 Curves (curving up and down):

You can either draw them on a piece of paper yourself, or buy a handwriting book with these lines already drawn.

If you draw them yourself, draw the lines using dots so that your child can trace them.  Make each line no larger than 2 cm.

Draw no more than around 10 to an A4 page. So, you can have 10 standing lines or 10 sleeping lines. Or it can be a mixture of 10 standing, sleeping, slanting lines and curves.

For standing lines your child should trace it from the top of the line to the bottom

For sleeping lines your child should trace it from the left of the line to the right

For slanting lines your child should trace it from the top of the line to bottom.

For curves that curve up or down your child should trace if from the left of the curve

Keep preparing the sheets for your child to practice until you see that your child is able to trace it well.

TRAILS

When your child is comfortable with lines then move onto trails.

This is an example of what we mean by trails. This is from the Primary School Prep Done 4U writing programme:

Again, you can buy a book with trails in them, or you can prepare them yourself.

When your child is comfortable with trails then move onto shapes.
