Primary School Prep DIY Guide-Math-Page 3

QUANTITY RECOGNITION

Fractions: Start teaching fractions as early as possible. Fractions in our experience is a topic that very young toddlers are able to understand and show you that they know a lot easier than topics like addition, which is a surprise to us.

The fractions to introduce are

  1. Half

  2. Quarter

  3. Third

Do not use any symbols. You teach them this visually. For a half, on one piece of paper, you draw a circle, then you put a line down the middle of the circle and then you shade half of the circle. For a quarter, you draw a circle and shade in a quarter and with a third you do the same thing and shade in a third.

Please see examples below

When you do a session, you hold up the paper with half the circle shaded and you say, “half”, then you put it down and pick up the paper with the quarter of the circle shaded and say, “quarter” and so on.
