Primary School Prep DIY Guide-Math-Page 2

QUANTITY RECOGNITION

Addition: On an A4 piece of paper you would have an addition sum in quantities, for example; one dot + one dot = two dots. Make the dots bold and large on the paper.

For addition, you would focus on equations with results from 10 and below. For example; two dots + two dots = four dots or one dot + three   dots = four dots.

You prepare flash cards containing the equations, using half a piece of A4 and with a marker pen, draw the dots and write the symbols on the paper.

See an example of how the equations should be on the page. One is word processed and the other is hand drawn.

Then, you show it to your child by holding up the flash card and pointing to each part of the equation. So, if the equation is one + one = two. You point to the one dot and say “one”, then you point to the plus sign and say “plus”, then you point to the “one” dot and say “one”, then you point to the equal sign and say “equals”, and then you point to the “two dots” and say “two”.

See an example of this being done in the below video

Please be aware that the child in this video is around two and a half years. Your child maybe just six months old. Therefore, you are not going to get the same reaction from a two year old as a six month old. Just because your six month old can’t speak and repeat the numbers you are saying, does not mean that the numbers are not registering. So long as you are flashing the numbers in front of your 6 month old, the numbers will register.

Just to prepare you, in our experience we have found that addition and subtraction (which we will talk about), seem to take children a lot longer to grasp than other topics. They will get there once you keep being persistent, but it will take them longer in our experience. That may not be your experience but just be aware of this possibility.

Subtraction: Subtraction should be taught the same way as addition using dots as quantities. Using only quantities between 0-10 for the equations so that the results are only 10 and below. For example; three dots - one dot = two dots.

See below an example of a flash card with a subtraction equation.

You show this to your child in the same way as the addition equation. See the addition equation video.
