Primary School Prep DIY Guide-Reading-Page 4

SINGLE WORDS

Making sure that they look at the words: Please make sure that when you are showing them the cards that they are actually looking at the words on the page and that they are not distracted looking left and right.

Stop even if your child wants more: Please stop at the end of the session even if your child wants you to continue. It is important that he or she does not get bored and continues to be interested in the sessions.

How quickly do you show the flash cards?: Show the flash cards at the pace of around 1 per second.

How to show the flash cards.?: As you show your baby the flash card, call out the word on the flash card as you show it to him or her.

Video example of showing the flash cards:

Here is a video example of the flash card being shown to a child.

Please be aware that the child in this video is around two and a half years. Your child may be just six months old. Therefore, you are not going to get the same reaction from a two-year-old as a six-month-old. Just because your six-month-old can’t speak and repeat the words you are saying, does not mean that the words are not registering. As long as you are flashing the words in front of your 5-month-old, the words will register.

Celebrate your baby:

After each session, please celebrate your baby/toddler. Make it fun for them.

Environment:

Ensure that when you are showing your baby/ toddler the flash cards that you do it in a room where there are no distractions from other things or noises.

You must be consistent/ show the material regularly.

To see results, this is not something that you do one week and then not do again for a few months. You must be consistent. You must have a regular schedule and you must continue until you see results. Do not depart from that schedule except in exceptional circumstances such as illness. Do at least two sessions per day at least five days per week.  You can do more, but this should be the minimum. Don’t do two sessions per day for six days and then nothing for one month and then back to your two sessions per day for six days. You will not see results.

If there is any risk of you not doing the sessions regularly, then joining Primary School Prep Done 4U will help with that because all the work has been done for you.
