"PHRASES"/'SENTENCES"
How to show the phrases
With phrases, you would show your child the phrase and then point to every word in the phrases as you read it out.
Example of showing phrases
Step 4-SENTENCES
The next stage is sentences.
This should be 4 and above word sentences. However, don’t make the sentences too long. Anything between 4-8 words is fine.
You read the sentences the same way you read the phrases.
After around one month of showing sentences, it is time to move onto books.
Still periodically show your child single words, couplets and phrases.
Then it is time for your child to start on books.
Step 5-Books
When to start books
Once you have completed sentences, it is time for books.
You don’t have to wait until your child is able to read the sentences or phrases before moving on to books.
What books to get
We advise getting a reading scheme that has books that take your child in stages, from very simple books with short sentences and a few pages at the beginning of the scheme, which then gets progressively harder, with more sentences per page, more words per sentences, more pages per book.
For example; you may find a reading scheme with 9 stages and perhaps 20 books at each stage.
If you can find it, ensure that the books have writing only on one page with pictures on the other page, otherwise the pictures will distract your child from reading the words. I have not been able to find such books. So, if you cannot find it an alternative is to cover the pictures in the book with a piece of paper so that your child can only see the words. Then, you show them the pictures after they have seen the words.
Read the books just as you read the phrases and sentences. So, point to the words on the page as you speak the words.
Another issue with the book is that many children’s books and reading schemes are targeted at introducing immoral relationships to children and things that confuse the children. We have had to be careful with selecting which books we read to our children and take care to avoid books that are morally corrupt. Although it is becoming increasingly difficult.
Primary School Prep Done 4U Books
Due to the problems we have seen, we have developed our own books for those parents who access Primary School Prep Done 4U. Parents can purchase these books as part of the reading scheme that takes the child from sentences to the book stage. These books avoid the issues that we normally find with other books that are generally available, and the pictures are on one page with writing only on the other page to avoid the pictures distracting your child. It also ensures that there is nothing immoral in the books that can corrupt the children.
The books will also take your child in stages from ‘stage 1 books’ to ‘stage 9 books’, after which your child will be ready for chapter books.
